The exhibition will open on the 12th of November at 7pm to members of the public. Come and enjoy some food, drink and the work of 2015's graduating graphic designers.

The brand & the story

The process of developing a brand identity for any exhibition is no easy task. This brief then grows when it must express the importance of 2015 being the final graphic design year, ultimately adapting how design is learnt and expressed from now onwards.

The challenge was to create an exhibition that is not only better than the previous year, but that is a more considered and inspired graphic design showcase than ever before.

A Name

The naming of an exhibition is imperative as it paves the ground work for any brand development and everything that follows. It was important to find a significant aspect or quality of our cohort which stood out from others.

Whether seen as fortunate or not, the 2015 year marks the final year the graphic design major is part of AUT teachings. Effortlessly, the name arose;
The End of Graphic Design.

Variants of this name were discussed throughout many weeks, ranging from 'The End' to 'Graphic Design End' as well as many others. With a much later addition of an underscore, the name was given the tick of approval being 'The End of Graphic Design_' (We will get into that development down below).

Why is this important?

Graphic design, like most industries, is founded on vast amounts of history. The field ecompases an array of skills and techniques, surrounded by theories and laws of typographic function, composition, colour, pattern, hierachy. - The list goes on and on.

With the addition of advertising, illustration, photography, digital, websites and many other pathways, the 'graphic design' label is changing.

This is a massive deal to us as students, to the former graphic design graduates and to the current graphic design industry people. The teachings of something so ingrained into our designer souls, is coming to an end.

We want to do the degree and the industry justice by presenting an exhibition that encapsulates the essence of graphic design and celebrates both the past and present with eyes looking towards the future.

Expressing Graphic Design

Developments of ideas from beginning? Like the use of Helvetica, left aligned type, greyscale palette - Graphic design defaults... Then going on to the photography of graphic design humour (mouse with short wire, cigarette etc). Basically the developments of the brand.
